Ordinary 29

Servant is one of the models of the Church. Following the example of Jesus who came to serve, not to be served. How do we embody this in the Church today? Our society teaches us to be pampered or to be served because we deserve it. We could use more sacrifice.

Ordinary 29

The first reading from Isaiah is taken from the "Servant Songs". The servant of the Lord will undergo suffering for God's sake. This is not a message we want to hear. We see it lived out in Jesus and His disciples, but would prefer that we not have to suffer any inconvenience.

The Gospel echoes the same message as the sons of Zebedee make a request of Jesus. The response is that they will share in His "Cup". Jesus then goes on to speak of "servanthood" for the sake of God.

Ordinary 28

How is the "Word of God" related to the Church? Step one is to broaden our understanding of "Word of God". In Scripture, it was rarely the written word alone. When a prophet said "The Word of the Lord came to me", it was an oral word to be proclaimed to the people.

The Word of God is meant for our education. Jesus made it clear that the Church would be our teacher, or proclaimer of the Word of God. He said "Whoever hears you, hears me." clearly giving His voice to the Church. He promised the Holy Spirit to guide the Church.

When we disagree with something the Church teaches, we often point out that as human interpretation. That gives us an excuse not to be obedient. The Church is human but inspired by the Holy Spirit. The Church is the instrument through which God speaks His Word.

Ordinary 28

Heb 4:12-13
NT teaching about Word of God is rooted in tradition of Prophets. The Word of God is effective. The people to whom the Letter to the Hebrews was directed seem to have grown lax in thier acceptance of the Gospel, perhaps boredom or stagnation. There is judgement in the Word of God.

To the Israelites, to hear meant to obey. The First Reading from Wisdom reminds us how valuable the Word of God for his people.

Possible topic is Church as Prophet proclaiming God's Word afresh in every generation.
